    St. Dunstan’s Plainsong Psalter

The St. Dunstan’s Plainsong Psalter includes all elements necessary for the recitation of the Daily Offices of the classic Book of Common Prayer according to the ancient Gregorian chant tradition. It combines the English text of the Coverdale Psalter with Psalm tones from the Sarum Rite, many of which were abandoned during the development of the Western Rite. The volume employs the original “square” notation proper to Gregorian plainchant. We are at work recording each of the Psalms and canticles as presented in the St. Dunstan’s Plainsong Psalter. A list of the Psalms by number is presented here. A list of the Psalms organized by Tone is on this page.…

Psalm 23 chanted, for Good Shepherd Sunday

One of the most frequently chanted settings of Psalm 23 is by Charles Hylton Stewart (1884-1932). The son of an Anglican organist who was also a priest, Stewart served as an organist in Rochester Cathedral and St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Stewart’s setting of Psalm 23 does not conform to the strict structure of Anglican chant, but is one of our choir’s favorite Psalm settings. It is sung here by the choir of St John’s Anglican Church in Elora, Ontario, directed by Noel Edison.

    Singing the Psalms

Learning to chant the Psalms In our parish, the Psalms are experienced in Anglican chant settings (e.g., this setting of Psalm 51 during Lent), or in the plainsong Psalm tones that are part of the ancient Sarum Use. To guide us in this venerable way of praying the Psalms, we have been relying on the St. Dunstan’s Plainsong Psalter. You may order a copy here. For some of the pedagogical aids that we have prepared for our instruction, see this page. Chanted and choral settings of the Psalms Here is a list of pages that contain recordings of chanted and choral settings of the Psalms. Most of the recordings are…
